Commentary:

Even though he’s imagining his friends talking to him, he’s imagining them as hand puppets. Green just likes his fantasies to be firmly based in reality. If he’s going to be talking to himself, he’s going to be talking to himself.

As for Green’s plan here, he has figured out what a guy like Yellow will spontaneously do on command, conditioned for over a lifetime.
